Types of Dentures We Offer
Dentures have been used to restore smiles for centuries, and thanks to modern techniques and materials, they're more effective, comfortable, and appealing than ever. Our dentist strives to design dentures that feel like a natural part of your smile and promote optimal bite function. We offer a wide range of denture types to ensure that we can meet the needs of all our patients, regardless of age, health, or the number of missing teeth. Our denture options include:
Full Dentures: These dentures replace an entire dental arch, completely restoring the smile. They consist of a gum-colored acrylic base and ceramic or porcelain prosthetic teeth. The dentures can be held in place by suction, denture adhesive, or a combination of the two. Our dentist will work with you to determine the most secure hold and comfortable fit based on your unique dental structure.
Partial Dentures: These dentures are ideal for someone who is missing several teeth but still has some healthy teeth remaining. They allow you to restore bite function and keep your natural teeth from shifting out of place. The denture uses an acrylic gum base and metal or acrylic hooks that fit around your remaining teeth, using them as anchors to keep the denture in place.
Implant Dentures: Implant-supported dentures offer enhanced stability as the implant posts are inserted into the jaw and act as a tooth root. Implants can support both full and partial dentures, and the number and position of the implants will depend on the type of denture you use. A full dental arch can use up to eight implant posts but can be supported by fewer depending on your needs.
Hybrid Dentures: A hybrid denture is more secure than traditional dentures without needing full dental implants. This restoration snaps onto a pair of implants or is retained by natural teeth to stay in place.
Overdentures: These dentures are similar to a hybrid denture but only attach to your healthy teeth.
All-on-4® Implant Dentures: This option allows an entire dental arch to rest securely on just four implant posts. Using carefully planned placement and angles, the implants distribute chewing force evenly, allowing a strong hold without the need for several implant posts. Our dentist will carefully evaluate your jawbone strength, density, and structure to determine if you are a good candidate for All-on-4.
Our Denture Process
At our practice, we strive to make the denture process a positive experience. You can count on our team to be patient, understanding, and communicative as we work with you to find the right solution for you. Our dentist takes the time to understand your needs, challenges, and concerns, and provides answers to your questions. We also perform a full exam to determine the state of your oral health and what options you may qualify for.
Next, the dentist prepares your smile for dentures. If a tooth requires removal because of decay, damage, or gum disease, we'll perform a gentle extraction to promote your overall health. We take impressions of your teeth and jaw to help us design your custom dentures. These impressions are sent to a trusted dental lab that will expertly craft your partial or full dentures. If you're receiving dental implants, the implant posts will be surgically placed into your jawbone and allowed time to integrate with the bone before you receive your dentures.
On average, it takes about two weeks for your new dentures to arrive. At this point, we welcome you back to our office for a final fitting. The dentist will have you try on the dentures and discuss the fit, making any adjustments as needed. You'll then be able to wear your dentures home and enjoy a fully restored bite.
Wearing Your New Dentures
It can take time for you to become used to your new dentures, and you may notice they feel a little strange or bulky. Your mouth will likely produce more saliva at first because of the presence of the dentures. You may also have a bit of difficulty pronouncing certain sounds as your tongue adjusts. Fortunately, these effects are temporary, and you should be well-adjusted to your dentures within a couple of weeks. You may often forget you're even wearing them at all!
While dentures can feel odd at first, they should never be uncomfortable or painful. If you notice any discomfort, slipping, or pain while wearing your dentures, don't hesitate to reach out to our dentist so that we can help.
